One Mac, many networks, different rules
At home, you might want to give all apps internet access. In cafés, block everything except browsers and VPN. At work, you need certain apps for internal servers. Without profiles, you'd have to reconfigure your firewall rules at every network change. Network profiles solve this — define your rules once per environment and let NetMute handle the switching.
How network profiles work
Create as many profiles as needed: home, work, public Wi-Fi, mobile hotspot, travel — any combination works. Each profile contains its own firewall rules, data limits, and blocked apps. NetMute detects your network automatically and switches profiles, or you can switch manually from the menu bar.
Useful profile scenarios
Create a 'Public Wi-Fi' profile that blocks everything except browsers and VPN — perfect for cafés and airports. Set up a 'Work' profile that allows company tools but blocks social media. Use a 'Mobile Hotspot' profile with strict data limits. Build a 'Travel' profile with maximum security for hotel networks.
Why context-aware security matters
Static firewall rules are a compromise — too strict at home or too lax on public networks. Profiles eliminate this compromise. Your security automatically adapts to your environment.
Key benefits
- Unlimited customised profiles for each network environment
- Automatic profile switching on network change
- Per-profile firewall rules, data limits, and blocked apps
- Quick manual switching from the menu bar
- Profile-specific notification settings
Frequently asked questions about network profiles
Can I switch profiles automatically based on Wi-Fi name?
Yes. NetMute detects networks by their SSID and can automatically apply the correct profile. You can also set a default profile for unknown networks.
What happens with a new, unknown network?
You can configure a default profile for unknown networks. We recommend setting your restrictive profile as default — it's safer to start strict and loosen later.
Can I share profiles between Macs?
Exporting and importing profiles is on our roadmap. Currently, profiles are configured per device.
