NetMute shows Mac app connections, identifies known tracking destinations and lets users block an app or a specific destination. It runs from the menu bar and analyses connection history locally. Free to download; NetMute Pro is a one-time purchase. Requires macOS 26 or later.

NetMute is a per-app firewall for macOS. It groups connections by app, shows traffic volume and identifies services in its tracker database. Users can block individual destinations or take an app offline. Profiles and data limits help manage different networks. Connection history is analysed locally; optional online features are documented separately. Destination categories describe recognised services, not the contents of encrypted traffic. Blocking coverage depends on settings and destination visibility, and rules can affect app features. NetMute is free to download, with additional features available through the one-time NetMute Pro purchase. It is developed by Jonas Höttler at Balane GmbH in Munich.

TEST NOTES

Follow one familiar app
Open an app, inspect its destinations and compare the recognised services with what you expected. A connection alone does not prove what data was sent or whether consent was given.

Block a destination, then test the app
Pick a recognised tracking destination, block it and test the app features you use. Record both the result and any side effects.

Check your browser setup
Use the browser protection check with your normal DNS and VPN settings. Historical block counts from different browsing sessions are not comparable protection rates.

LIMITATIONS

Destinations are not message contents
Recognised domains help identify services. They do not reveal the content of encrypted requests or establish an app’s intent.

Coverage depends on the setup
Browser DNS, VPNs, Private Relay and available destination names can affect filtering. Test the configuration you actually use with the protection check.

Optional online features
Public blocklists require downloads; encrypted DNS sends queries to a resolver. Enabled community contributions share tracker and app information. Consult the app privacy policy for the data involved.

Not a VPN or antivirus
NetMute does not hide your public IP address or scan files for malware. Blocking can affect app functionality.
