How to Stop Your Mac Eating Hotspot Data When You Tether to an iPhone

Your Mac has no idea it is on a train. Join an iPhone hotspot and macOS behaves exactly as it does at your desk: it checks for updates, catches up on the photo library, re-syncs the folder you touched this morning, and lets every background app reach the internet whenever it likes. None of that is malicious. It is the default assumption that Wi-Fi is free, and on a metered plan or a roaming SIM it gets expensive within minutes. This is the ordered playbook: what to switch off before you tether, where the gigabytes actually go, what Low Data Mode really covers, and how to make the whole thing automatic.

The short answer: your pre-tether checklist

If you have no time for the rest of this article, work through these before you connect. They take about a minute and every one of them is reversible.

Pause iCloud Photos. In the Photos app, check the sync status at the bottom of the Library view and use the pause control if it is offered. Turn off automatic updates. System Settings > General > Software Update, click the info button beside Automatic Updates, and switch off downloading and installing until you are back on real Wi-Fi. Quit your cloud sync clients. Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Creative Cloud and Backblaze should be quit outright rather than paused, because several resume on a timer.

Stop network backups. System Settings > General > Time Machine > Options, and set the backup frequency to Manually. Turn off Continuity extras you are not using. System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff covers Handoff, AirPlay Receiver and iPhone Mirroring, all of which chatter across the local network. Throttle video. Drop YouTube to 480p, turn your camera off in calls that do not need it, and switch music apps to lower quality or offline playback.

Then set Low Data Mode on the hotspot network. System Settings > Wi-Fi, click Details beside the connected network, and turn it on. The setting is stored against that specific network, so it applies whenever you rejoin the same hotspot and never touches your home Wi-Fi.

That last step is the one people over-trust. Low Data Mode is a hint macOS passes to apps, not a rule it enforces: Apple's own services respect it, and a large share of third-party software was never written to look. Sections three and four cover that gap and how to close it.

Reverse the list once you are back on unmetered Wi-Fi. Having to remember that is exactly why the manual approach falls apart in week two of a trip.

Where the gigabytes actually go

The real consumers are rarely the thing you are doing. Browsing and email are noise. The damage comes from four sources, and the honest ranges are wide because they depend on your library, your projects and your video habits.

System and app updates. A macOS point release delta is commonly one to three gigabytes; a full major upgrade can be six to fifteen. App Store updates stack up in the background, adding another gigabyte or two with no visible window. Photo and cloud sync. A few hundred queued photos at three to five megabytes each is one to two gigabytes, and a couple of 4K clips from the weekend can match that on their own. A cloud folder re-indexing after a change pushes several hundred megabytes to several gigabytes.

Video and calls. Streaming at 1080p runs roughly one and a half to three gigabytes an hour; 480p is usually well under one. A group call in HD lands around one to two and a half gigabytes an hour, while the same call with your camera off is normally under a hundred megabytes. Developer tooling. A container image pull, a dependency install or a toolchain update is a five hundred megabyte to several gigabyte event that fires the moment you open a project.

So what does a careless hour cost? A Mac joining a hotspot cold, after a few days away from real Wi-Fi, can plausibly spend two to ten gigabytes before you finish your coffee: an update, a photo backlog, two sync clients catching up and an HD call on top. That is a good week of a modest travel plan, and on a tariff billed per megabyte while roaming it is the sort of bill people take to their carrier.

Worse, you cannot easily see who did it. The iPhone lumps all tethered traffic into a single Personal Hotspot entry under Settings > Cellular, with no breakdown by Mac app. Activity Monitor's Network tab shows bytes sent and received per process, but the counters are cumulative since each process started and are not separated by network. You get a total and a shrug.

The pre-flight settings, in order

Here is the same checklist with the exact paths, ordered so the biggest savings come first.

iCloud first, because it is the largest. Pause syncing from the status under the Photos Library view if that option appears; otherwise open System Settings, click your name at the top, then iCloud > Photos, and turn off syncing for this Mac while you travel. Check iCloud Drive in the same panel: if Desktop and Documents syncing is on, every file you touch on the road gets uploaded. Turning sync off does not delete anything, it only stops the transfer.

Updates second. System Settings > General > Software Update, then the info button next to Automatic Updates. Switch off downloading new updates when available, installing macOS updates, and installing application updates from the App Store. macOS is entirely capable of starting a multi-gigabyte download the moment it sees a connection it considers good. While you are in System Settings > General, open Sharing and confirm Content Caching is off, since it exists to hoard Apple downloads for other devices.

Backups third. System Settings > General > Time Machine, then Options, and set the backup frequency to Manually. If your destination is a network share or a cloud service, an hourly backup on a hotspot is a slow leak that runs all day. For Backblaze, Arq or similar, quit the client rather than trusting its own throttle.

Continuity fourth. System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff holds Handoff, AirPlay Receiver and iPhone Mirroring. These are mostly local-network features, but they keep discovery traffic running and, in the case of iPhone Mirroring, can carry a live video stream between your two devices over the link you are trying to protect. In System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details it is also worth disabling Auto-Join for networks you do not want your Mac drifting onto in a hotel.

Media last, because you control it by hand. Set YouTube to 480p from the player's quality menu, lower playback quality in your streaming and music apps, and in video calls turn off HD and your own camera when the meeting does not need it. Audio-only participation is the single biggest saving available in a working day on a hotspot.

Low Data Mode: what it covers, and what it does not

Turn it on under System Settings > Wi-Fi, click Details beside the connected network, and enable Low Data Mode. The setting belongs to that network rather than to your Mac, so the hotspot stays restricted while your home network is untouched. The iPhone has its own equivalents worth setting: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Low Data Mode, plus the matching toggle under each saved Wi-Fi network.

What it genuinely does is meaningful. macOS pauses automatic software update downloads, holds background App Store downloads, pauses iCloud Photos syncing, defers general background tasks and asks system video services to use less bandwidth. macOS can also recognise a Personal Hotspot and mark the connection as expensive, which is the flag well-behaved apps are supposed to check before starting anything large.

Here is the part that catches people out: all of that is a hint. Low Data Mode sets an advisory flag on the network path, and third-party apps have to voluntarily read it and voluntarily change their behaviour. Plenty never look. A browser still streams whatever a page tells it to, an Electron app still pulls its own update, and a container runtime, package manager or game launcher is under no obligation to care. There is no cap, no counter, no warning at eighty percent and no block at a hundred. It is a polite request, and it is the only lever macOS gives you.

Enforcement is a different job, and it belongs at the firewall layer where a connection can actually be counted and stopped. The limits are stored per network profile, so home can stay unlimited while the hotspot profile caps the browser, blocks the sync clients outright and leaves everything else a small allowance.

Make it automatic so you never think about it again

Manual checklists fail predictably. The first time you tether you do everything properly. The third time you are in a hurry, and by week two you have left automatic updates off for a month or turned them back on in a hotel lobby and forgotten. The durable fix is to attach the rules to the network instead of to your memory.

Check the traffic monitor, or Activity Monitor's Network tab, in the first few minutes after joining a hotspot, since almost every runaway transfer announces itself immediately. And set a global cap slightly below what your plan allows, so the worst case is an app going quiet rather than a bill arriving. A Mac on a metered connection does not need to be crippled. It needs a budget, and something willing to enforce it.
