Principle: Local Data Processing

By default, NetMute processes your data exclusively on your device. Network data, connection logs, and analysis results do not leave your Mac. There is no telemetry, no tracking, and no user profiling. Two clearly scoped exceptions are described below: the voluntary, anonymous tracker report (opt-in) and the download of public blocklists.

Network Analysis

All DNS queries, connection data, traffic statistics, and analysis results (including privacy scores and tracker detection) are processed and stored locally on your device. This data is not transmitted to our servers or third parties. The only exception is the voluntary tracker report (see below), which transmits anonymous tracker or app names only.

Voluntary Tracker Reporting

NetMute offers the option to voluntarily report unknown tracker or app names to improve our tracker database. This feature works as follows:

  • The report is completely voluntary and opt-in
  • Reports are transmitted anonymously — no user ID, device ID, or IP address is stored
  • Each report requires your explicit consent before transmission
  • Personal data is removed from the report before transmission — only the tracker/app name and domain are sent

Optional public blocklists

If you enable public blocklists in the Pro features, NetMute periodically downloads publicly maintained lists of known tracker domains (e.g. Hagezi via GitHub and EasyPrivacy via easylist.to). As with any web request, your IP address is technically transmitted to the respective provider during the download. No usage, device, or personal data is sent. The lists are applied exclusively on your Mac. This feature is optional and disabled by default.

Optional encrypted DNS (DoH)

NetMute can optionally enable system-wide encrypted DNS resolution (DNS-over-HTTPS). If you turn on this Pro feature and choose a provider (Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or Quad9), your DNS queries are routed encrypted through the selected resolver. Those queries therefore leave your device and are subject to that provider's privacy policy. NetMute itself does not see or store these queries. The feature is optional, disabled by default, and can be turned off at any time in macOS System Settings.

In-app purchases

NetMute Pro is a one-time in-app purchase handled entirely through Apple's App Store system. Purchase, restore, and verification of prior purchases are processed exclusively via Apple's StoreKit. NetMute operates no servers for this and receives no payment or personal data. Apple's privacy policy applies.

No Cookies, No Tracking, No Analytics

The NetMute app does not use cookies, does not employ tracking technologies, and does not collect analytics data. There is no user activity tracking within the app.

No Data Sharing with Third Parties

We do not sell or monetize data and do not share personal data with third parties. For optional features, NetMute downloads publicly maintained blocklists (e.g. Hagezi, EasyPrivacy). Only if you enable the voluntary tracker report are anonymous tracker names transmitted via Apple iCloud/CloudKit — with no user, device, or personal data.

Rights of Data Subjects

You have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Right of Access (Art. 15 GDPR) — You have the right to request information about the personal data we process.
  • Right to Rectification (Art. 16 GDPR) — You have the right to request the immediate correction of incorrect or incomplete data.
  • Right to Erasure (Art. 17 GDPR) — You have the right to request the deletion of your data.
  • Right to Restriction (Art. 18 GDPR) — You have the right to request the restriction of processing.
  • Right to Data Portability (Art. 20 GDPR) — You have the right to receive your data in a structured, common, and machine-readable format.
  • Right of Withdrawal (Art. 7(3) GDPR) — If processing is based on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
  • Right to Complain (Art. 77 GDPR) — You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
